Day 6 - Sunday, Sept. 7

For those of you just joining the story, welcome to this page and thanks for thinking of Max!

Max is our youngest son, he is four years old.

He was admitted into St. Joseph's Hospital in Bellingham (our local hospital) on Tuesday morning, fighing E Coli virus. For the record, while at the Pediatric unit at St. Joe's, he received really great care. The numbers on his blood count were going the wrong direction - some normally numbers getting high, and some normally high numbers going low.

The E Coli bacteria progressed into HUS, which stands for Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome.

On Friday night, he was transferred by ambulance to Children's Hospital in Seattle.

He's had somewhat of a rough go of it ever since.

Last night, his blood pressure was up to 130 over 110. With oxygen levels dropping, the medical staff took x-rays which showed some fluid in his lungs. He ran a fever, which has now broken and is doing better. He is on daily dialysis, which is helping his levels for now.

We've been told by the medical staff that he will get worse before he gets better - that we haven't seen the worst of it yet. This is a normal part of dealing with HUS.

So many people are calling and asking what they can do to help - and I cannot express enough gratitude for those calls. Right now, the best thing you can do is simply pray. Pray for healing, and pray for recovery. Pray for this medical staff. Pray also for Levi, Max's big brother. Pray for Shannon and I and we do our best to be everything that we can be for Max and for Levi.

Most of you know me as a pastor and worship leader - some of you, however, know me as a neighbor or a musician, or an online forum dude, so for those of you that are coming to this site that aren't Christians, thanks for understanding the amount of talk about prayer, hope, and faith in God. The only bedrock of hope that we have right now is in Him.

For those of you that STILL want to do something, a great thing you can do for Max is to leave a note on this blog, I promise that every single one of them will be read to him.

We've been told to expect to be here for at least another week, maybe two - and perhaps longer.

We appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers, and ask that you continue to keep us in mind and lift us up in prayer.

Gratefully,
Sam, Shannon, Levi, and Max Middlebrook

Hi Max, my name is Stephen and I live in a small community called Gen Ross. It's on the banks of the Trent River just a 20 minute drive north of the Bay of Quinte. That's on the north shore of Lake Ontario, Canada. I've been sick too. I have had an operation for cancer and another for heart disease. My oldest brother is also battling cancer. I have a four year old grandson who's father passed away last month due to liver failure. And when my grand daughter was only two she spent a long time in hospital because she was sick with a disease called HSP. So, you see, we know a lot about hospitals. We have met lots of great doctors and nurses. I hope you have too. All of us here wish you get well soon.

Hi Max,
My name is Sam Price, from England. I am a Christian mother, and have a boy around your age. He got very sick and had to go to hospital too, earlier this year, and he got better.

I love seeing your pictures on the forum your daddy runs, and I have got to say you are one handsome young man!!
Take it easy buddy, and I am praying for you every day, that God will make you better very quickly.

Hey Max!
You are too good looking to be down for long! You remind us of our youngest son, who had some bumpy times when he was very young. Well, he is 23 now, and still a handful!
When you're 23, your mom and dad will look back on this and think - wow, what a tough kid that Max is.
So in the meantime, we will be sending whatever good kid vibes we have left. When you feel better, look at your parents and your brother Levi and you will see where all your strength came from!

Sam,
We prayed for your little guy yesterday when I first received your email about his condition and we called to add him immediately to the prayer chain at our church.

Our congregation of a few hundred prayed for Max this morning (Sept. 7th) during our service.

We'll continue to hold him and your whole family up to the Lord for healing and comfort.

We know that Jesus is looking over his little body in that hospital bed and that He is touching Him to bring a full recovery with no side effects or trouble to follow

Know we're praying here in northeast Pennsylvania, my friend. Keep your head up and your eyes focused on the Great Physician and your arms around your family.

In His Grip,

Howdy Max,

This is Andy in Northern Ireland.

There's this great story about what Jesus did when he was getting a hard time from folks who didn't understand the children's loud behavior when they were around Jesus.

He just replies with a few words from one of his favorite songs: "have you never read, '"from the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise'?"

Well, that's what we're praying for you buddy - that your days of praise and strength return quickly.

Blessings - Andy
P.S. Tell your Mum and Dad we're praying for them and Levi too

Hi Max,
I'm 99.9999997609349% sure you don't remember me but I sure know you. I remember back when you were still a baby and would be in the baby room on Wednesday mornings at church. I was mostly there to be with my little friend Chloe but we'd all play together sometimes.
Anyway, I have another little friend named Max who is very familiar with the hospital you are at. He's only 3 but spent the majority of his first year of life there. He really enjoys saying hi to Mickey when he visits there. If Max could give any advice about the place, I'll be sure to pass that on to you.
I'm praying a lot for you and your family. So are a bunch of 4 year olds at the school I work at. They know your name and know you are sick and they believe God is with you 100%! And so do I.

Hi Max! This is Krista Schei up the highway in Everett WA. My daughter, Katie, is four years old and when she heard you were really sick she asked immediately if we could pray for you. So we did! She even woke up this morning asking if you were still sick! Today she and her brother, William, made hearts for you out of paper and painted them. Hopefully we can give them to you soon and talk to you. We are praying for God to heal your body so you can start jumping around again soon! With love, Kyle, Krista, Katie, Will and Ben Schei

Hi Max,

I'm a guitar player (just like your Daddy... only he's probably better than I am) from Atlanta, Georgia. I have a daughter who spends a lot of time at the hospital, so I know it's not a lot of fun. Hopefully you'll get better real soon so you can get back home and sleep in your own bed. My daughter, Shannon, is just about your age--she turns 5 on Tuesday--and when she saw your picture, she said you were cute. I hope you don't think girls are yucky... :)

I told Shannon about your map, and how you're putting pins in it to show where these messages are coming from. Shannon wants you to know that we actually live in a town called Cumming, which is north of Atlanta, but since your map probably won't show Cumming, you can just stick the pin in Atlanta. Shannon says to use a purple pin if you have one, because that's what color Georgia is on our wall map. If you don't have purple, she says that you can use green because that's what color Washington is on our map, or use red because it's Shannon's favorite color. If you don't have any of those colors, she says you can use whatever color you want. (Sorry... she can be a little bossy sometimes!)

Get better, Max, and if you ever come to Atlanta, be sure to come say hi to Shannon. :)

Max - we've never met but we wanted you to know that there are people who care about you and are praying for you in Cleveland, OH... about 2,400 miles from you! It'd take you about 34 hours to drive here. Though you'll have to wait a few years to do that since you probably don't have your driver's license yet... or do you? :)

Have you ever been to Ohio? Well, we don't have beautiful mountains here and we're not by the ocean like Seattle but we live near a huge lake and have lots of trees that are just starting to turn beautiful colors... aren't you glad God created different seasons for us to enjoy? I'm going to pray that you have a window you can look out...

We teach a Sunday school class with kids your age and I'll be sure to ask them to pray for you too.

You seem like a strong little dude and I'm sure it helps knowing Jesus is right there with you. :)

Hi Max and Family,
I am a mommy in Buda, Texas (by Austin) and my son just left for college!

At church yesterday, two mommy's were sitting in front of me with 4 year old boys that they were wrestling, and shushing and hugging. I was very jealous, and part of me wished that my son was still small enough to sit on my lap at church. (He is very tall, 6'5", so it is really out of the question when he comes to visit).

I am praying for you and your family! Love, Sharon
